The orbiter was named “The Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter” or Danuri. Danuri means “enjoying the moon” in Korean. The orbiter will also be tasked to survey the Moon’s resources such as water ice, uranium, helium-3 silicon, and aluminum.
How will Danuri study the Moon?

Danuri will endeavor to develop a wireless Internet environment for connecting satellites or exploration spacecraft. This orbiter will stream the song Dynamite from Korean-pop band BTS to test the network.

If the mission is successful, South Korea will become the seventh country in the world to have sent a mission to the Moon, after the US, Russia, China, Japan, Israel, and India.
What is the purpose of traveling to the Moon?
In June, South Korea also launched its first indigenously developed space rocket Nuri. South Korea says its space program is for peaceful and scientific purposes and that any military use of the technology, such as spy satellites, is for its defense needs.
This Moon mission has been developed by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute in collaboration with NASA. Scientists say that with this mission, South Korea will have the ability to step on the moon by 2023.

South Korea’s $180 million mission is the country’s first step in lunar exploration. This high-powered satellite is designed to skin just 100 kilometers above the lunar surface. Scientists expect to collect geologic and other data from this low polar orbit for at least a year.
